Join the Weisman in celebrating Día de los Muertos, in collaboration with Centro Tyrone Guzman, with a multi-site ofrenda project, marking the moments in the year where life and memory meet, moments when the living and their ancestors meet over shared rituals of memory, offering, and love.
About Dia de Muertos x Centro Tyrone Guzman
This year, Centro's Day of the Dead celebrations explore the ancient practices of the Aztecs, whose vision of life and death was deeply intertwined with nature and the cosmos. Through the story of Mictlán — the nine levels of the underworld — and the reverence shown to deities like Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacíhuatl, guardians of the underworld, we rediscover how the Aztecs understood death as transformation, not loss.
The three exhibits reflect this ancestral wisdom: at Centro Tyrone Guzmán (opening October 27, main event November 1), the Weisman Art Museum (opening October 27, main event October 29), and the Minnesota State Capitol (main event October 30), we invite you to walk among the symbols, colors, and memories that keep this ancient dialogue between life and death alive.
WAM's Community Ofrenda
Featured artist and altarista for the Weisman's ofrenda, Monica Vega gathers her artistic practice and inspiration from her familial roots in Michoacan, Mexico. The Day of the Dead is deeply personal to her and she loves teaching people of all ages about its meaning and traditions.
Join us at the Weisman on Wednesday, October 29, from 5 - 8 p.m. for a community gathering unveiling the ofrenda at WAM, featuring live music and poetry, pan de muerto and hot chocolate, and art-making activities. The community ofrenda will remain on view through Sunday, November 9 during museum open hours.
Presented in partnership with Centro Tyrone Guzman. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
