I have constructed a pair of pants and a tube top, with a focus on texture design. The surface texture is created through the use of crumpled VHS and silver Mylar glued to a base fabric. This look is inspired by vessels, more specifically, looking at music as a literal and figurative vessel for both sounds, as well as visceral emotions. My design is symbolic of this concept, in that the garments themselves are illustrative of the visceral emotions/textural sounds encapsulated within the song, “Dreamtime,” by the artist Flume. This song is especially powerful in what it contains, contrasting vast, open synthesizers with the textured clicks of saturated drums. The rhythm of folds, crumples, and sparkles of these materials reflecting in light illustrate the visceral reactions I feel when hearing this song.

About the Design Showcase: During the spring 2020 semester, 10 emerging student designers were tasked with creating a one-of-a-kind garment using non-traditional materials and technology inspired by the exhibition Harriet Bart: Abracadabra and Other Forms of Protection.

After eight weeks of material testing, sketching in the galleries, writing, and work-shopping their designs with local artisans Marina Shimelfarb, Charlie Wagner, and the artist herself, Harriet Bart, the final designs are nothing short of radical, innovative, and deeply personal.

The Seven Forms Student Design Showcase is presented in partnership with the UMN College of Design, Department of Theatre Arts and Dance and Juut Salon Spa.
