The Bookmark Project: A Community Exchange

Inspired by the cultural and literary richness of Librería Donceles, The Bookmark Project invites visitors to contribute to a participatory exchange centered around books, language, and identity.

Through handwritten notes on bookmarks, guests are encouraged to share personal reflections, meaningful quotes, cherished book memories, or thoughts on the role of reading in their lives. These bookmarks will then become part of a growing communal archive—tucked into the pages of books throughout the installation for others to discover. In return, visitors are invited to take a bookmark left by someone else, fostering an exchange of perspectives and experiences through the intimate and tactile medium of print.

Use the free, provided supplies in this space to make your own bookmark and join the conversation.

Step 1: Reflect

Take a moment to consider a quote, thought, or memory that resonates with you—whether it’s from a book you love, an experience tied to reading, or a reflection on your cultural identity. This can be something you write yourself or a passage that inspires you.

Step 2: Create Your Bookmark

Using the materials provided, write your chosen quote or design on the blank bookmark. Decorate your bookmark with colors, patterns, or symbols that deepen the meaning or express your personal style.

Step 3: Leave Your Note

You can either leave your completed bookmark for others to take on the Bookmark Project wall, tuck it into one of the books in Libreria Donceles,  or take it home as a keepsake.

Drop-in, Self-Guided Art Activity

Each month, WAM presents a self-guided art-making activity inspired by an art piece or artist from the museum's collection. Everything you need to make your own masterpiece is provided and the activity is designed to be accessible and open to all. Drop-in during open hours and get creative!

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Additional general operating support is generously provided by Ameriprise Financial and the Art and Martha Kaemmer Fund of HRK Foundation.
