Join us for Comedy Night at WAM featuring headliner Ali Sultan, one of the most exciting voices in comedy today, with his witty insights and sharp humor. The night will be hosted by the always-hilarious Maggie Faris, whose quick wit and infectious energy are sure to keep the laughs rolling. Kicking things off will be a special performance by the UMN Comedy Club—watch as these rising stars deliver their best punchlines!
This event is part of the museum’s broader exploration of humor with the exhibition Laughing Matter, a deep dive into the comedic genius found within WAM’s diverse permanent collection.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Ali Sultan
Ali Sultan saw his first stand up comedian when he moved to America from Yemen at the age of 15. He grew the desire to go on stage but first he needed to learn English. Ali became the first comedian post pandemic to be on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and first Yemeni to make a stand up television debut.
Ali has been on Comedy Central’s Hart of The City with Kevin Hart. He filmed his Half Hour comedy special in Dubai for Comedy Central Arabia. He was named both "Best Local Comic" and artist of the year by City Pages. He represented Minnesota and won the "Best in The Midwest" competition at Gildas LaughFest. His album Happy to Be Here debuted at #2 on iTunes and can be heard on Spotify, Sirius Xm and Pandora. Ali also performs clean comedy for Colleges, non profits and cooperates. His latest 2021 special can be seen on Wanda Skyes Unprotected Sets on Epix and his Drybar will be out in the summer.
Maggie Faris
Meet your new best friend, Maggie Faris. Maggie is noted for her ceaselessly cheerful personality and seemingly endless series of quirky, intelligent jokes dissecting our fears and social barriers. Maggie is a comedy competition assassin. Audiences and judges love her. She won the Minnesota Laugh Off. Another competition win made Maggie the Public Address Announcer for the St. Paul Saints professional baseball team, which led to an appearance on ESPN™s Cold Pizza for her unique style and memorable announcements. She beat out Tig Notaro to win both the "Funniest Clip of the Year" and the Silver Nail award at the Aspen Comedy Festival. Curve magazine named Maggie Faris one of the "Funniest Lesbians in America." She recently won The Advocate Magazine’s national search for the "Next Funniest Queer Comedian." She was also voted “Best Comedian” by her Minnesota peers.
Maggie has also been invited to perform at Boston Women's Comedy Festival, Gilda’s Laughfest, Out Loud Comedy festival in San Francisco, Laugh Your Asheville Off, and best of the fest in the 10,000 Laughs Festival and the first Madison Comedy Festival. She has opened for such greats as Jay Pharoah, Fortune Feimster, Michael Che, Maria Bamford, Daniel Tosh, Kathleen Madigan, Louis Black, and Damon Wayans
