Concept Statement

My final design, What’s in a Name?, for the Weisman Art Museum Student Design Showcase used reflection as the category of protection. Reflection can have many meanings. Mirroring, thought, and consideration are a few meanings that were important to my design. I was initially inspired by the Harriet Bart exhibition, Abracadabra and Other Forms of Protection, specifically taking note of the repeated pendulum silhouette she used. The overall silhouette of the garment I made takes note of this shape. It utilizes a custom textile created with layers of shower curtain, Mylar blanket, acrylic paint, and hot glue. The silhouette is supported with a frame created with wire and electrical tape. The frame is covered with sagebrush. The final design represents what’s in a name. Layer one represents family and friends that support you. Layer two is a familiar place. Layer three is a brand (who/what I represent). The final layer is the golden Mylar blanket that is literally reflective so the viewer can take a chance to question what their name means to them.

About the Design Showcase: During the spring 2020 semester, 10 emerging student designers were tasked with creating a one-of-a-kind garment using non-traditional materials and technology inspired by the exhibition Harriet Bart: Abracadabra and Other Forms of Protection.
After eight weeks of material testing, sketching in the galleries, writing, and work-shopping their designs with local artisans Marina Shimelfarb, Charlie Wagner, and the artist herself, Harriet Bart, the final designs are nothing short of radical, innovative, and deeply personal.
The Seven Forms Student Design Showcase is presented in partnership with the UMN College of Design, Department of Theatre Arts and Dance and Juut Salon Spa.
Sage James
Sage James is a second-year apparel design student at the University of Minnesota. Most of her work is inspired by the unconventional mysteries in daily life and art. She loves exploring art museums and incorporating inspiration from the art directly into her design work. Specifically, looking at the movement, colors, and feeling that the art evokes. She is also inspired by her drive to explore new things and create brilliant experiences. Recently she learned how to skateboard which inspired new shapes and purpose to her work.
