In his “A Talk to Teachers” from 1963, James Baldwin opined that “American history is longer, larger, more various, more beautiful, and more terrible than anything anyone has ever said about it.” This exhibition, which draws its title from Baldwin's description, showcases works from the Weisman's collection by American artists that demonstrate, confound, and probe these aspects of the American experience.

This summer, Weisman Art Museum presents a new public art installation, Just Yesterday. The 60-foot wraparound mural will be on prominent display along the exterior façade of the museum at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. The installation will be on view from May 17 through October 1, 2021. In addition to the installation, a screen-printed edition of each poster will be considered for the Weisman’s permanent collection.

Falling asleep is a unique act of letting go of consciousness. Dreams that we see while unconscious inspire artworks, scientific theories, and rituals. Sleep is deeply cultural: decisions on when and where we are or are not allowed to sleep are driven by societal norms at least as much as by personal drives and natural cycles. When artist Peng Wu and neurologist Dr. Michael Howell talk about sleep, their conversation is not only about physiology and disorders: they talk about sleep as a culture and about sleeplessness as a cultural phenomenon that cannot be addressed with a pill.
