Lyndel King was the Director and Chief Curator of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum for 40 years, during which time she guided it through the design and construction of its current building, designed by prominent architect, Frank Gehry. King has served on the boards of the American Association of Museums, the Association of Art Museum Directors, and the International Council of Museums-US. and as co-chair of a task force for the protection of university museum collections. King has been a reviewer for the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute for Museum and Library Services. She presents international seminars on museum management. She is chair of the board of the Hill Manuscript Museum and Library and serves on the Schubert Club and Minnesota Center for the Book Arts boards. In 2020 she was awarded the American Association of Museum’s highest honor, the lifetime Award for Distinguished Service to Museums.
