Expand classroom learning, interact with exhibitions, enhance student experiences, and create lasting multi-departmental relationships through the Weisman Art Museum. Read on to learn more about our exhibitions, tours, and learning resources and how they can work for you.

Free, Student-Led Tours

The WAM Student Tour Guides program is a paid opportunity for University of Minnesota students to develop and lead interactive, close-looking tours of the museum for the visiting public. Visitors may drop in, meet other curious-minded museum goers, and listen to a WAM Guide's approach to works in the museum's collection via a 3-stop tour on a theme of their own choosing.

Museum as Classroom

WAM invites you to make our galleries part of your classroom this year. All class tours are free to University of Minnesota classes. To ensure gallery availability, reservations are required at least four weeks in advance for guided visits and 2 weeks in advance for self-guided visits. With notice, the museum may be available during off hours for U of M classes.

Please contact Laura Pilarski, Public Engagement and Learning Associate, for more information about bringing a UMN Class into the museum for a visit. Email her at pilar017@umn.edu.

Please have this information available when scheduling:

  • Contact information including phone and email
  • Course name, number and department
  • Number of people in the group
  • Preferred visit dates and time

Or consider the galleries an extension of your classroom and host a session anywhere in the galleries. We can assist with selecting artworks to make connections with your curriculum, provide background materials on the exhibition/artwork, and provide support in teaching with artworks. Contact pilar017@umn.edu to schedule your class session in the galleries.

FACULTY AND CAMPUS RESOURCE GUIDE (2023/24)

Art Study

Our Art Study Classroom offers an opportunity for close study and discussion of an original artwork. With advance notice, collection objects not currently on view can be requested from storage for viewing. Art Study visits are limited to eight students. A visit may be combined with a larger class tour, allowing students to visit in shifts.

For more information, contact Rosa Corral at recorral@umn.edu.

Artful Writing

Artful Writing is a web-based resource as well as printable kits that include a range of art images and writing activities for students and teachers to choose from. Students are challenged to practice careful observation, connect with prior knowledge and personal experience, express ideas, and reflect upon the quality of their work.
