Weisman Art Museum is pleased to present a pop-up exhibition, Lifetime Membership: 20 Years of bohemian press, curated by the museum’s student leadership cohort, WAM Collective. A selection of works by bo’ press members, past and present, is on view in the museum’s Target Gallery through March 22, 2026. Admission is free and open to the public.
The pop-up show features an array of prints made by current members and alumni that, together, chart 20 years of student experimentation and expression. Faculty advisor Jenny Schmid, an active printmaker on the local scene, says she started bo’ press in 2006, shortly after she was hired into the Art Department at the University of Minnesota. “The motivation was to have a fun environment and to connect with the greater printmaking community,” she says. “Printing for visiting artists allowed students to understand and be part of professional artists’ processes.”
Printmaking feels as vital as ever in the Twin Cities art and design community, with a number of the show’s featured artists and alumni, like Piotr Szyhalski and Sue Coe, still visibly prominent in recent community organizing efforts here and around the country.
Schmid says printmaking feels particularly relevant in this moment:
Students gravitate towards working with their hands right now. Some institutions originally thought the computer age would destroy hand-printing. But [technology] has actually connected print communities and made people want to do more physical work in shared spaces.
She goes on, “The bo’ press meetings, lately, have been a reprieve from what everyone is going through. Just gathering, sharing skills and activating the space is a form of resistance.”
Current bo’ press member Claire Richter says:
I want students and prospective club members to know that bo’ press is more than just a space for printmaking. It's a community space, one with a revolving door. Students (and sometimes even staff) come to our club at all skill levels, and sometimes just for a few meetings throughout the year. We accept and welcome everyone, wherever they are in their printmaking journey.
Club president Iggy Ebbesen echoes that sentiment: “I hope that, regardless of whatever crisis or renaissance comes next, bohemian press can continue to be a supportive place for students to gather and make badass art about it.”
WAM visitors can get their hands inky throughout the month of February, with bo' press-designed stamps for art-making in the Open Studio, located in the Target Gallery alongside the pop-up exhibition.
