Help WAM launch Museum Lab, an after-school arts education program! Museum Lab is a collaboration with 4-H, a global network engaging youth to reach their full potential, and Ka Joog, a nationally recognized nonprofit which enriches the lives of Somali American youth. Museum Lab was created in response to the need for more culturally relevant youth arts programming in the Twin Cities community. Through this partnership and with the aid of two professional teaching artists, resources will be combined to respond to the need to reduce barriers to participation in large arts institutions.
Museum Lab will serve 30 students participating in 4-H and Ka Joog’s STEAM Club in the spring and summer of 2019. STEAM Club ignites curiosity in learning about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. While open to all, the Club engages primarily Somali American adolescents in Minneapolis who experience barriers accessing educational programs.
WAM offers this after-school arts program out of a shared interest between Ka Joog and 4-H to empower participants to preserve and express their culture through creative means. Museum Lab will develop communication skills, critical thinking, visual literacy, and inspire participants to deeper explore their culture and identity. Participants will use art to bridge cultures, navigate their own identity, and create a gateway for communication and self esteem.
Thank you for believing in the transformative power of art education!
