ABOUT THE ART

Star Wallowing Bull creates vibrant and detailed Prismacolor drawings, often incorporating imagery from historical events, pop culture, and personal narratives. American Dreamers includes motifs of Native American symbolism, icons from pop culture and American history, and animals. Wallowing Bull’s art is influenced by the media and specific historical events, but it also features many autobiographical references. With its bright colors and images from the media, his work is often compared to Pop and modern art.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Star Wallowing Bull was born in Minneapolis in 1973. He is of Ojibwa and Arapaho descent and is a member of the White Earth Nation in Minnesota. His father is artist Frank Big Bear Jr., whose work is also in the Weisman Art Museum’s collection. Wallowing Bull dropped out of school at age seventeen and began abusing alcohol, an addiction he overcame through his art practice. In 2001, he was awarded the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian Native Artist Fellowship, and in 2010 he received a Bush Foundation Artist Fellowship. He now lives and works near Fargo–Moorhead.
