Additional Details

Described by a Minneapolis critic in 1935 as a “painter’s painter,” B.J.O. Nordfeldt was an artist whose prolific career evinced constant experimentation with subjects, genres, and media of modernist art. The Swedish emigrant lived throughout the world—from his early training and teaching in Chicago and the dynamic art scenes of Paris and New York to his participation in popular American art colonies in Provincetown, Santa Fe, and Lambertville, New Jersey. These various locales encouraged him to engage with new styles and techniques in oil paintings, watercolors, prints, woodcuts, and etchings. His landscapes, portraits, and still lifes showed similarities with the work of Matisse and Cézanne, as well as elements of cubism, and his wood carvings and prints revealed influences from Paul Gauguin and Japanese traditions.

Home to the largest collection of works by this innovative modernist, the Weisman Art Museum invites you to join us for an evening of presentations and discussion with B.J.O. Nordfeldt American Internationalist curator, Gabriel Weisberg, and fellow exhibition and catalog contributors, Paul KrutyLyndel King, and Janet Whitmore, moderated by Weisman Art Museum senior curator, Diane Mullin.

There will be a public reception in the Weisman's Riverview Gallery following the panel conversation. This event will be recorded on video and shared on the Weisman's YouTube channel. ASL interpretation is available on request, with at least two weeks notice.
